Hatch Series

This body of work stems from an investigation into the slave trade from Polynesia, also referred to as blackbirding. The hatch pattern carved into the paint alludes to the covering over the hull of a ship where people were trapped like cargo during the long voyage to Peru. Drilled holes in the work create a three-dimensional void space behind the surface, adding black – not through the addition of pigment, but the absence of light, to convey the depth of darkness and the emotional state of those stolen from their home.
