Scorched Paintings
Flame is used as a brush in these works where the surfaces are tortured, embracing the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi. The origin of these works came from the investigation into the burning of religious artefacts with the arrival of the missionaries across the Pacific. Often these works appear to contain something hidden behind the surface that the viewer can’t see, and asks the question of what is lost in the destruction of culture - both in the past and present.
